Tom Walkowski aka Weekender is the author of one of the most interesting Polish rock debuts this year. The album "The Lighthouse" https://id.ffm.to/thelighthouse
takes us to the musical regions of southern rock, reserved mainly for American bands. It is even more surprising when we learn that the leader is a sailor from the Gdynia district of Chyloni, and the entire material was written ... on a ship. Now let's get to know the culprit of all this confusion.
As an 8-year-old boy, I saw the ZZ Top music video “Rough Boy” on TV and that's where my interest in guitar began, as you can see, it was straight on the rock line. We started the first band with the guys from Chylonia in 1990. It was called Vendor, with whom we performed mainly on the Tri-City stages, although there was also Jarocin in 1992 and a tour around Denmark.
WEEKENDER is simply a continuation of Vendor with the same team, but the time, work and duties verified the current reality, so I started working with session musicians. I mainly record the ideas that I compose in the studio, so at the beginning I work alone. Today Weekender and the album "The Lighthouse" is a one-man project in which I work with the vocalist Rudiger on-line.
THE LIGHTHOUSE ALBUM was made primarily at sea. The title piece symbolizes longing, it is the cry of a lost soul, looking for the light to point the direction. I think everyone can see a little bit of themselves and their own situation there. In its narrative, the piece takes you to the middle of the ocean. I needed a special sensitivity there. And Bob Spring, who dressed it in his mystical voice. Later, I created a profile on an American musicians site and uploaded one of the songs. Rudiger saw this as something that might sound good. The effect for me was surprising so we took it further, where the album "The Lighthouse" is the finale. "Rudy" is a typical sideman, as he calls himself "I'm not a marketing man". This album is our child ... Without him, there would be no "The Lighthouse" in this form.
My inspiration was mainly the "Seattle set", ie Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Perl Jam, but as I mentioned, ZZ Top is a complete start. "The Lighthouse" is the culmination of a beautiful discussion with people with extremely different views on music. I am glad that the album was created in the same form as I assumed at the beginning, without fashion stickers or the mechanisms that are in force today. The sailor from Chylonia did not succumb to the suggestions or algorithms of today. There is no commercial targeting here… this is the only way to create such a classic true message
