Biography
Montuno Cubano is a Latin band, and their repertoire includes bolero, guaracha, salsa, rumba flamenca, ballads, and son Cubano.
Jorge Peña is the composer, lead vocalist, and he plays the requinto, which is an instrument that looks like a guitar, but it is shorter, deeper, and tuned higher so it has a bright sound. Jorge performed in many countries in Europe, and for several years in Spain.
In Cuban music, the montuno is the last section of a song, and it is usually faster, bolder, and semi-improvised. In Spanish, “montuno” means, “comes from the mountain” and it refers to a style of music that originated in Santiago de Cuba, which is where Jorge Peña grew up on a coffee plantation.
Santiago de Cuba is widely recognized as the birthplace of traditional Cuban music. Jorge uses the rhythms he learned from a generation of legendary Cuban musicians and he writes about his family, his country, and life experiences in Cuba. His favorite theme is love.
