" A philosopher poet with a pop sensibility."
Mark Boone is a songwriter with lyrics that tackle the major issues facing humanity today. With Xavier Machina he creates a futuristic character that time travels to this era to directly challenge people's beliefs in an attempt to change the course of future history. With songs like "Rabbit Hole" and "Enemies" Boone creates a dialog between the character and audience.
“They want us fighting each other
They use our differences to agitate
To keep us fearful and angry
So they continue to dominate
It’s all about the money and the powerful man
You’re just another pawn in his masterful plan
He’s working hard to keep you distracted and dumb
So he’s telling you he’s fighting for god and a gun”
Through this character Boone addresses world issues confronting the audience unabashed through the voice of an outsider on songs like “QED”.
“I can see the tears well in your eyes
From the stupid guys and their stupid fuckin’ lies
That should come as no surprise
With your freedom in demise
And your soul-less compromise
The only truth is science based
Not aloof in a twisted faith
There is no proof of a master race
Just the goof of a stupid hate
Only the facts without the spin
The mathematical acumen
No one faith will ever win
Only those who inherit the wind”
The album continues with this narrative thread of the character imploring the audience to change their beliefs, and his own waning confidence to succeed in this quest. Other songs “Our Last Goodbye” and “Obvious Mystery” are more personal where the character reflects on his journey and what he sacrificed by taking this mission.
The music on Xavier Machina can best be described as retro-alternative. Mark layers vocal harmonies and uses many vocal effects that create a futuristic sound while emanating a classic retro vibe.
Boone completed all the music and the sequence of the music prior to writing any lyrics. The lyrics and vocal melodies were written and recorded in the order the songs appear on the album. Mark performed all instruments and vocals, as well as engineered and produced the album.
