Biography
From a prodigy to a seasoned musical force, Ethan "Chef" Pheonix has carved a dynamic career with his unique 2nd Alto/1st Tenor vocal presence and masterful percussion skills. His journey began at nine when his undeniable talent earned him a full-ride scholarship to the prestigious American Boy Choir in Princeton, NJ. That early foundation set the stage for a life dedicated to music—both in the spotlight and behind the scenes.
In 2007, Chef was recognized as Best Male Vocalist at the Detroit Music Awards, a testament to his remarkable vocal abilities. Over the years, he has lent his talents as a session musician and live performer across the globe, gracing stages and studios in Spain, Japan, Ireland, England, and Mexico. His reputation as a "hired gun" musician led him to collaborate with top artists and production houses. One of them is a memorable session playing tambourine and bongos for Aretha Franklin—a chance moment that became a legendary career highlight.
Chef's production and session work extends to major industry powerhouses such as Glenn Brown Productions (GBP)—known for its work on Eminem's 8 Mile—and the iconic Hit Factory NY, where he recorded vocals for the We Are Family 9/11 memorial documentary directed by Spike Lee. His music has also made it to television, contributing to Lifetime's hit series Dance Moms.
Despite his success, Chef's journey has not been without hardship. In 2000, personal tragedy nearly led him to walk away from music entirely after losing his mother to cancer, his biological father, and seven other family members to violence. Years later, the passing of his stepfather—the man who raised him—transformed his perspective. What was once just a passion became a lifeline, a therapy, and a purpose.
Unlike the harsh realities of the city he came from, Chef creates from a place of light, drawing inspiration from sound and joyous moments in life. His music tells a story that words alone cannot—a reflection of resilience, soul, and an unwavering love for the art.
For Chef, the journey continues, one note at a time.
