Biography
In 2012, Calgary-based electronic music producer Ryan Hall created Soulier, both to produce melodic and dark tech house and techno music, and to perform multi-dimensional improvised live electronic music. Since his project began, Hall has had opportunities to tour in Mainland China, and has been nominated for several awards for his musical productions.
In 1994, Hall began a musical journey as a bass player performing with classical and jazz bands in his hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. As a result of his exposure to classical and jazz, his musical style was solidified in improvisational techniques and theory – which has become a hallmark of his live electronic performance as a DJ.
In July 2014, Hall completed his first tour in China under the Soulier moniker - with performances in Beijing, Tianjin, and Changsha. He also performed in front of thousands on the electronic stage at the popular china-wide Strawberry Music Festival, and was signed with Music Dish who supported the tour.
2015 was a great year from Soulier, having expanded his tour in China including performances in Beijing, Tianjin, Wuhan, Changsha, Xiamen, and Guangzhou. It was also a tumultuous and emotional year during which his first full album titled Expansions was nominated as Best Electronic Album of the Year by the Western Canadian Music Awards. Expansions was written primarily using a eurorack modular synthesizer, and solidified the Soulier sound in its melodic tech house style.
2016 was a busy year for Soulier, with another tour in Mainland China in Summer, and a coinciding EP titled “Mandarin”, which was released in support of the tour. He was again nominated for a western Canadian music award for his album Expeditions.
Soulier is releasing his third full-length album, Math. This album is a departure from previous releases, where he has further refined his sound and approach to electronic music production. Math is a beautifully dark and melancholic album that spans through ambient, downtempo mixes that have subtle edges and contrasts - while still having some tracks that are intended for the dance floor.
He has lived in Brisbane and Halifax, and now calls Calgary, Alberta his home.
